Great Schools by Design Supports Innovation in NYC Public Schools

On May 1-2, 2009, the American Architectural Foundation conducted a two-day Design Charrette for the New York City Department of Education at the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Middle School 131, lead by Portland architect, John Weekes, and AAF President, Ron Bogle. The focus of the Charrette was on designing the space for an innovative pilot concept entitled "School of One" which redefines the role of technology in the learning environment. The developer of "School of One" is Joel Rose, Chief Executive for Human Capital at the New York City Department of Education, who was appointed by Chancellor Joel Klein to lead the district’s efforts to incorporate greater innovation into the culture of the nation’s largest school district. This Design Charrette was part of the lead-up to Schoolhouse 3.0: Designing Facilities for the 21st Century Technologies and Curriculums, scheduled for later this year in New York City.

Go behind the scenes to see how the School of One vision was turned into reality in this short documentary film about the NYC Department of Education’s Summer 2009 pilot at M.S. 131.
